After Elmer Cheney's admission today that he had "a beer" at lunch at noon but there had been no further drinking on Saturday before he shot his friend in the face, I am surprised by one thing in particular.

I thought by now pretty much everybody in the United States knew better than to buy the "honest, Ossifer, I jush had one li'l beer an' thass all" routine.

I guess I was wrong.
