finally, the facts

ABC news, with their department of dedicated investigative journalists, has found that the weapon used was really not as dangerous as early reports indicated:

"After difficulty getting information from Cheney's staff, ABC News learned from sources mostly outside the White House that the vice president's Secret Service contingent had notified the local sheriff an hour after the vice president accidentally shot prominent Texas lawyer Harry Whittington with a pellet gun while hunting for quail."

A little further digging by yours truly has discovered more detail. The weapon was a very rare, top-of-the-line model, which was described by an eyewitness as:

"An official Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time."

Thank goodness this country has a press that operates free of the restrictions and oversight of the government.
