why the death penalty is wrong

While there are a multitude of arguments against state-imposed murder, here is the simplest one:

The person being executed suffers no more. They are dead. The only people who are punished are the innocent family and friends of the executed one who are forced to live with the pain of that punishment for the rest of their lives.

How unfair is that in a civilized country?
