The United States of America just became more civilized.

I'm afraid my own opinion is that the USA has just shown how utterly uncivilized it is.
This Bill resembles a glass of fine whiskey that has been poured into a bucket of cyanide. Health insurance corporates will be laughing their socks off this morning.

I said "more" civilized! I've been a harsh critic of this adventure in governance, but at the end of the final act, I found I had to agree with the Man O' Krug that this established a baseline that healthcare for all was a proper goal of society and that this deal, despite its obvious problems, sets the government in motion and takes the first steps to getting us there. The insurance companies are gleeful right now, but it is a false sense of security. Every country that has started down this path ultimately ended up with health care for all citizens and the near elimination of health care for profit. I never expected to see this much happen in my lifetime, and it can only get better as the vast majority of the people come to understand the freedom and security that nationalized care offers. I'm often wrong, but Krugman has a hell of a track record for being right!

Milo - I can say with complete honesty that, in this instance, nothing would please me more than to be wrong. The American citizen, like every other citizen of this planet, has a right to affordable health care. Because this is America, it should have the best system in the world - a model towards which others may aspire. Maybe one day it will, though I doubt you or I will see it.

Believe me, I'm old enough that it's been a long time since I've been naive enough to trust anybody, but the one thing that I think we can count on is that at least the left knows better than to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs, the American citizenry. The right has become as voracious and unscrupulous as the corporations that own them, where the left at least tosses some cookies out now and then...
