my Earth Day report

On April 22, 1971, the first Earth Day was observed. People all over the country in all walks of life pledged to do things to positively affect the environment.

Then George W. Bush was made president.

The End.

My memory of the first earth day is my best friend & I in 7th grade (yup, I'm an old fart) LOL. We went to our principal to ask permission to organize an event at our school for this new concept.

His reply? That kids shouldn't be worried about things like this, it was above our heads and we needed to go back to class and forget about silly things like that.

Yep, I remember when I was in grade school in the late 60's and we had our first newspaper recycling drive down the block at the high school. We had a tractor trailer parked there and we all drove around and collected papers and dropped them off. Our parents laughed and said it was ridiculous ... it was a waste of time. There was never going to be a demand for recycling and it was so expensive it would just fall by the wayside.
