golden anniversary

Congratulations to humankind on the fiftieth anniversary of space exploration and the launch of Sputnik 1.

I remember my dad pointing it out to me as it went over...I was so thrilled! I was eight.

That was actually the spent final stage booster, the actual Sputnik itself was so small it didn't reflect enough light to be visible to the unaided eye. My father also showed me "the Sputnik." That and the wonderful comet Arend-Roland (also shown to me by my father) a couple of months earlier were the trigger events for my lifelong interest in astronomy and space exploration. Plus, Robert A. Heinlein.
