Ungrateful Slobs

The passengers from "Miracle Flight US1549" have been informed by the airline that they will be comped an upgrade to preferred customer status for a year and they've received checks for $5K for to cover their lost luggage.

I think that's pretty cool. They have been MORE than compensated for their luggage loss (current limit is $3300 per person) and given an opportunity to be treated to posh surroundings in future flights--all in addition to having their LIVES SAVED BY A PILOT WHO DID EVERYTHING RIGHT when an "act of god" threatened to end all of their lives, and perhaps the lives a hundreds more.

Yes, that's right. A situation arose where they plane was disabled--completely out of control and beyond the control of the airline or any of it's employees-- and their lives were saved, They were more than compensated for their luggage, and now they're being given some additional perks as a kindness.

Today it was reported that the passengers are up in arms because they're not being properly compensated for their experience.

I think they should rescind the upgrade offer, cancel the checks and send them a lousy $3000 (the legal requirement) and tell them to PISS OFF. Those passengers obviously don't grasp the value of their own lives.

dick

the country we deserve

The cable blowhards have been tittering all day like a bunch of twelve year-old boys who just heard the word "tittering." Why? It seems that Al Gore went to Washington, D.C. today to give a talk on global warming and climate change. And guess what!

It was really, really cold in Washington, D.C. today!

Get it? Isn't Al Gore an idiot? And fat?

I swear, I will never buy another American product that I can avoid. If we aren't smart enough to save ourselves, we aren't smart enough to make things that are worth spending money on and are safe to use.

They've turned me into a Marxist, Ma...

It just keeps getting deeper, and this one might just take the cake. I used to be a mid-westerner with a strong work ethic and moderate views, but they've pushed me for the last time:

I'm looking for a way to stop doing the last bit of business with BoA that I am doing now. I fired them as a bank nearly 4 years ago. Their local staff was outstanding but their corporate operations repulsed me. Then they bought out one of my credit card providers. It was my best card. Lowest interest, highest limit (for emergency purposes) but I'm shopping now. I hope to put that card in the shredder next month, where I'd like to put their management.

Oh, yeah, and as for Home Despot--I already started making a conscious effort to avoid them whenever I can. If the local hardwares store doesn't have what I need, I'm sure to go to their big box competition. I started that plan after 2004 elections when I realized how much they gave to he who must not be named, and heard how they treat their employees.

Corporate America: Kiss MLWA!

There, I feel better. Not much, but enough to go back to sleep. Bastards.......

and the lights go on

Judging by his terse statement to the press, President Obama has finally grasped the fact that the republicans are not good-faith negotiators and are perfectly willing to let the country collapse in order to try to discredit political adversaries.

The only way to win against these people is to crush them and exterminate them politically. Don't give the scorpion a ride across the river, he's already proven what he is.

fucking nerve

As expected, before his first full week in the presidency, the usual republican fucktards are whining about being excluded by the majority party and how they are not getting the influence over legislation and government actions that they feel they should have.

Yes, the very same morons who have driven the country into penury and international scorn are offended because they aren't getting to have much input on setting policy about the problems that they brought upon us all! Well, assholes, sit down, shut the fuck up, and suck on this:

"Once the minority of House and Senate are comfortable in their minority status, they will have no problem socializing with the DEMOCRATS. Any farmer will tell you that certain animals run around and are unpleasant, but when they've been fixed, then they are happy and sedate. They are contented and cheerful. They don't go around peeing on the furniture and such."

peculiar

Today is the first day in eight years that I have not felt queasy from wondering about what manner of horrible things were being done in my country's name around the world.

I could get used to this feeling.

I'd planned a timely background for the page today and some special posts, but since I'm nursing a sinus infection, spent all Sunday night (awake) and most of Monday and today with a friend and her mother at the hospital (my community service for the week) I decided this was all I could manage. It's what we've been waiting for....for many long years. Thanks for keeping the faith all these years Milo, and Ronni and all faithful readers and friends. Thanks to Barack Hussein Obama for stepping up to the toughest job in the world, and most of all--thanks to all of America for boarding the clue bus in time for November 4th 2008.

nice touch, Google

famous last words

Before departing office, George Bush gave a final speech to a couple of thousand of the biggest dead-enders who screamed support for him even after a catastrophic eight years. During the speech, Bush assured his audience that for his entire administration, "we led with conviction."

Yeah, with any luck you'll end with one, too.

This arrived by mail in the week...it's only a "commemorative" version, but it's already framed and on the wall. There were one million of them distributed to volunteers and donors.

personal corporatehood

News reports today indicate that the US government is going to shovel another couple of hundred billion into Bank of America to shore up their ability to pay massive salaries and bonuses to their executives, to reward shareholders for their foresight in buying stock in a company that can't support itself, and to continue to purchase other floundering financial institutions.

According to the laws of our land, corporations have the same rights and prerogatives as individual citizens by virtue of the legal notion of "corporate personhood."

How about we make that go both ways? I'd like to get some bailout money, and I'm as much of a person as Bank of America. It's time for the United States to bail out the "persons" of the country in exactly the same way and with exactly the same generosity and lack of accountability that is being manifested in the current bailout program that apparently only applies to the "corporate" persons in our citizenry. Actually, we deserve it even more, because we aren't hiding our profits in off-shore bank accounts and we put money into the American economy instead of taking it out.

Time to pony up, and don't be stingy about it.

get serious

What does a twenty-five year old spacecraft look like?

This is the shuttle Discovery being rolled out in preparation for its mid-February launch, scheduled for February 12, 2009. The Discovery first flew August 30th, 1984, a week-long mission that returned to Earth on September 5th. The Discovery is the shuttle that lifted the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit, and the coming February mission will be its thirty-sixth trip into space. The Discovery has spent three hundred and ten days in orbit, ten months in the most demanding environment humans have ever explored.

Ocean-going ships seldom have lifetimes that long, and the conditions in which they function are nowhere near as dangerous and difficult as the trip to and from Earth orbit and the kind of stresses that are placed on a craft as it is the vacuum and temperature extremes of space.

Would you fly on an aircraft that showed its age the way Discovery is? Most people wouldn't drive a twenty-five year old car. Why should the explorers whose efforts have provided so many benefits to the rest of us have to risk their lives on worn-out and antiquated equipment?

Support NASA and space exploration. Our world and our lives would be not be full of the technological wonders we take for granted today without it.

oh my

Pearl really IS Lacey's long-lost sister.

Not Tomorrow....

Dear Today Show,

I give up. I used to watch you because you maintained a fairly healthy balance of real, unbiased news, and meaningful day-to-day life information and entertainment. Your news coverage has suffered the last few years and it's driven me steadily further away.

This week's appearance of Ann Coulter is the bottom. I'm not sure if she was supposed to be representative of news (that would be a stretch, of course) or meaningful and real life information and entertainment (yet another stretch). Since I can only classify her as offal, I assume that you've run out of the other two offerings.

Hmm, or, perhaps, you've lost so many viewers this is the only way you can attract others. Those expecting quality have been run off and now your only choice is to attract what's left: flies.

off to a good start

I have a new baby. I now own a legendary Yamaha YC-45D, the Tyrannosaurus Rex of combo organs. An instrument that hovers somewhere in between the worlds of organ and synthesizer, I have wanted one of these rare monstrosities since they first came out in the very early Seventies. Welcome home, beautiful.

gonna be hard to beat

It's not even January 2nd yet, and I believe we already have a winner for the most un-self-aware post of 2009, courtesy of "The Politico." In an article that picks up where McCain's "Celebrity" ads left off, the authors explain how Obama is going to be "the Britney Spears of 2009" because of his popularity.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1208/16975.html

The real giggle payoff is the sentence that starts with "with a faction of compliant, adulatory and skin-deep chroniclers added to the media mix..."

And that would be different from the last eight years how, exactly?

how 'bout that?

Happy 2009, the International Year of Astronomy and the four-hundredth anniversary of Galileo's first telescope!
